Criminal Division
Entry-Level Prosecutors

The Criminal Division of the San Diego City Attorney's Office is seeking entry-level prosecutors who are interested in working in one of the nation's most comprehensive misdemeanor prosecution offices. After completing an extensive in-house training program, new deputy city attorneys will be assigned to one of three trial teams, and will be expected to review and issue cases, as well as prepare and try cases set for trial.

After gaining experience in screening cases, handling various court hearings, and trying a broad array of misdemeanor cases such as DUI, battery, vandalism, and petty theft, our deputy city attorneys have the opportunity to join one of six specialized units within the Criminal Division, which includes the Appellate Unit, the Code Enforcement Unit, the Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit, the Domestic Violence and Special Victims Unit, the Drug Abatement Response Team Unit, and the Neighborhood Prosecution Unit.

The starting salary for entry-level prosecutors is approximately $60,417, with excellent benefits. Applicants must either be admitted to the California State Bar or must have recently taken the July 2008 California Bar Exam and be awaiting Bar results. While those who are awaiting Bar results may apply, no job offers can be made until applicants have been admitted to the California State Bar. Interested applicants should send a cover letter, resume, and law school transcript to Marta B. Overly by October 10, 2008.

Please mail a cover letter and resume to:

Criminal Division
Legal Interns

The Criminal Division of the City Attorney's Office hires volunteer legal interns who are in their second or third year of law school. Each semester and summer, interns are assigned to one of the following units: the Appellate Unit, the Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit, the Domestic Violence and Special Victims Unit, the Drug Abatement Response Team Unit, the Neighborhood Prosecution Unit, the Screening and Arraignment Unit, and the Trial Unit.

Legal interns assist attorneys in all stages of prosecuting misdemeanor offenses, including domestic violence, thefts, DUI's, traffic crimes, graffiti, prostitution, drug-related offenses, alcohol-related crimes, batteries, sex crimes, consumer and environmental crimes, drug abatement, and other misdemeanors. Interns have the opportunity to assist with researching, writing and arguing pre-trial motions, jury trial preparation, and other special projects. If eligible to become certified under the California State Bar's Practical Training of Law Students program, interns will have the opportunity to conduct bench trials on infraction cases.

Interested law students should send a cover letter, résumé, and law school transcript to Marta B. Overly, indicating which semester they are interested in volunteering.
