Recruitment
The San Diego City Attorney's Office accepts resumes for deputy city Attorney positions in both the Criminal and Civil Divisions. When hiring entry-level prosecutors in the Criminal Division, we look for broad experience, strong oral and written advocacy skills, and distinguished academic achievement. In the Civil Division, we seek highly qualified, motivated individuals with extensive experience and strong writing skills.
Attorneys are directly hired by the City Attorney. They are not members of the civil service system. However, the Deputy City Attorney's Association represents attorneys in labor matters. Deputy city attorney positions offer competitive salaries with excellent benefits. California State Bar dues are paid by the City Attorney's Office.
The Office does have non-paid and paid positions for law students in both the Criminal and Civil Divisions. Please continue to check our website under Job Listings for up-to-date information on these programs.
The City's Personnel Department processes applications for all other legal positions, including legal assistants/paralegals, investigators, and legal secretaries. Employees in these allied legal positions are in the civil service system. Please visit the City of San Diego's employment web page for more information
