The San Diego City Attorney's Office established the Neighborhood Prosecution Unit (NPU) in 1997 to work in partnership with community members and police officers on developing long-term solutions to neighborhood crime problems. NPU is comprised of prosecutors, San Diego Police Department officers and support staff. In 2006, City Attorney Michael Aguirre expanded NPU to include a prosecutor in San Ysidro, and in September 2006, a prosecutor will be assigned to work in the Southeastern area of San Diego.
