This is an exciting time for Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP). The nearly 6,000 acre park, one of the largest urban parks in the country, is located in District 7. The Mission Trails Regional Park Task Force is working to expand the park by using Proposition 12 funds to acquire an additional 2,500 acres of East Elliott property.
The Task Force is comprised of elected officials from jurisdictions bordering the park including Mayor Dick Murphy and Councilmember Madaffer, who chairs the Task Force. By increasing the northern boundary, we'll be able to provide greater opportunities for people to enjoy outdoor recreation.
Recently the City Council approved plans for the Rancho Encantada project which results in the City acquiring 2,000 acres of open space - of which 1,500 acres will become part of MTRP - and nearly $7 million for parks, libraries and road improvements. Of that $7 million, $2 million will be allocated to the park. Plans are well underway for an equestrian center.
Last year Councilmember Madaffer met with our state representatives to help secure an additional $1 million for the equestrian center and he will continue traveling to Sacramento on your behalf to lobby for additional funds. Kumeyaay Campground, which has a full complement of amenities, opened in December of 2000 and we encourage you to visit
