Parking and Your BusinessDo you have "parking" questions? Would you like to see if angled parking, time-limit parking or parking meters in your area would help your customers find a convenient parking space? Are there abandoned curb cuts (driveways) in front of your property that may better serve as an on-street parking space? Do you believe more of your customers would walk to your store if your sidewalks were in better condition? You are encouraged to attend the Community Parking District Advisory Board meetings in your area or contact the Community Parking District Program Administrator at (619) 236-6476 for additional information or to provide your suggestions. For additional parking information, visit the Parking Web site.Diagonal / Angled Parking - In some instances, converting parallel parking spaces to angled parking spaces will increase the number of spaces available "on-street". In other instances, if there are a large amount of driveways on the street for example, the number of on-street parking spaces may actually be reduced if parallel spaces were replaced with angled spaces. This is just one of the reasons why it is necessary for the City's Transportation Engineering Division to conduct an evaluation of a street to determine if angled parking is an option for your location. Another reason an evaluation may be necessary is to verify the street width can accommodate angled parking. The street must be wide enough to handle travel lanes and the additional area required for angled spaces. If you would like a study to be initiated, it is recommended that you request a letter be written to the Transportation Engineering Division by your Community Parking District. It will be necessary for the property owners in the area to consent to the angled parking. Time Limited Parking " Parking Meters - Parking time limit and meter zones are established where on-street parking is in short supply and is being monopolized by long-term "parkers" in areas where "turn over" of spaces is desired. Time limit zones can be used in all areas of the City, while parking meters are usually only installed where the adjacent property is for commercial use. Before time limit or parking meter zones can be installed, the City must conduct a parking study to determine the existing parking usage. A study may be requested by the City Council, Community Planning Groups, Community Parking Districts or by a petition signed by the property owners representing at least 51% of the property frontage involved (a minimum of one block face - one side of the street, with some exceptions). If the study determines that time limit or parking meter zones are appropriate, the City Council will make the final determination whether or not to install the zones. (see Council Policy 200-04 for more information). Curb Cut (Driveway) Replacements - If you have an inactive or abandoned driveway on your property and would like it replaced, please contact the Community Parking District Program Administrator at (619) 236-6476. You may be in a Community Parking District that is offering to bear or share the cost of this type of work in order to increase parking spaces in a specific area. In order to do this, the districts are attempting to "bundle" curb-cut replacement requests together by location in order to keep costs down. Please understand that you must be the actual property owner in order to replace the driveway with a curb. Painted Curbs - It may be possible to have a "yellow" commercial loading zone or "white" passenger loading zone installed in front of your business. While this reduces on-street parking, these loading zones may be necessary. The City of San Diego's Transportation Engineering Division will ask that you submit an Application to them for these painted loading zones. An engineer will visit your site and determine if the loading zone is appropriate. Things they are looking for include: Is there another loading zone in the area? How far away is the other loading zone? Is this primarily a commercial or residential area? Once Transportation Engineering has determined the outcome of your application, you will be contacted. Authorized work is estimated to be completed within 90 days. Call Transportation Engineering at (619) 533-3126 for an application. Faded Street Signs or Sidewalk Repairs: To report faded street signs or curb markings, or if you have a damaged sidewalk and would like an evaluation of the cost to repair it, call: Street Division at (619) 527-7500. The City has a program specifically designed to assist property owners with the maintenance of their sidewalks. This program is called the "50/50 Cost Sharing Program". The program is primarily for residential areas, but commercial properties are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. When a damaged sidewalk is reported, the City will send an inspector out to determine the cause of the damage. If the damage is caused by old age and deterioration, and is a minimum of 75 square feet, the 50/50 program will pay one half of the costs of the repair and the work will be performed by City forces. The inspector will complete a cost estimate of the repair and will send it to the property owner. Upon receipt of a check from the property owner for half of the cost (payable to the City Treasurer), the City will repair the sidewalk within four months. |
