Genesee Widening Project Fact Sheet
Project Description and Purpose
The City of San Diego's Engineering and Capital Improvement Projects Department is constructing improvements on Genesee Avenue in University City. This project area is located on Genesee Avenue from Campus Point Drive to the I-5 overpass bridge.
The goal of this $4.2 million project is to improve traffic flow and alleviate traffic congestion along Genesee Avenue by widening its existing four lanes to six lanes, from Campus Point Drive to the Interstate 5 overpass bridge. West Coast General Corporation, the lowest qualified bidder, is the contractor for this project.
Project Improvements
This project includes the following construction improvements:
Widening Genesee Avenue from 4 lanes to 6 lanes between Campus Point Drive and I-5 overpass bridge
- Improving existing medians and adding new raised medians, sidewalks and bus pads
- Adding southbound right turn lane at Campus Point Drive
- Adding northbound right turn lane and modification of traffic signals at Scripps Hospital Drive
- Adding guardrails at I-5 overpass bridge
- Removing and relocating trees and other landscaping materials throughout the project area
Construction Information
Timeline and Work Hours:
Construction is anticipated from July 2007 to August 2008. Daytime construction hours will be Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. West Coast General will also perform night work Monday - Friday 8:00 pm - 5:00 am.

Traffic Control
Although Genesee Avenue will remain open during construction for vehicle access, the Contractor is allowed to close 1 to 2 lanes in each direction to create a safe working area. Please exercise caution and observe the posted speed limit when traveling through the construction zone.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic
Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained through the construction zone. However, a bicycle detour has been created for those bicyclists who choose not to travel through the construction zone.
