Electronic Waste Recycling
Electronic waste, or e-waste, includes household or office electronic
devices in working or non-working condition that are no longer used. E-waste
is known to contain heavy metals such as mercury and lead, which if placed
in the landfill, can harm people and the environment. Examples of e-waste
include:
- Cell phones
- Computer monitors
- Computer printers
- Computer processing units (CPUs)
- Cordless phones
- Laptop computers
- Radios
- Telephone answering machines
- DVD/VHS players
- VCRs
- Other electronic devices that contain a circuit board
Recent research from the Environmental
Protection Agency shows the amount of e-waste produced is growing
at a rate three times faster than municipal trash. With technology constantly
being updated, the lifespan of electronics is rapidly diminishing. This
makes the need for recycling these items more important than ever.
How to Recycle E-Waste
Donations
Working and non-working electronic devices may be acceptable for donation
for reuse or repair. Televisions and computer monitors are accepted for
free by many thrift stores and the Miramar Recycling Center. Call your
favorite local thrift store, charity or non-profit for information regarding
items accepted.
Recycling Locations
The Miramar Recycling Center accepts e-waste for recycling. Some items
require a drop-off fee while other can be recycled for free. Other recycling
locations can be found on the Electronic
Product Management Directory.
Events
Throughout the year, many organizations sponsor Electronics
Recycling Events.
