Paramedic II

Under general supervision and in a training capacity, Paramedic II is a member of an emergency medical team and performs journey level paramedic duties in emergency and non-emergency medical situations and performs related work.

The Paramedic II position is a fully experienced or journey-level class within the City's Paramedic service. Incumbents of this class are expected to perform their duties with only occasional instructions or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the department.

Examples of Paramedic II Duties:

  1. Responds to a variety of emergency and non-emergency medical and health care situations.
  2. Examines a patient to assess the nature and extent of illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or needed.
  3. Administers advance life support care to sick and injured people prior to arrving at the hospital as authorized and directed by a physician for emergencies such as heart failure, insulin shock, pulmonary disease, drug overdose, fractures, head and spinal cord injuries, burns, poisoning, and obstetrical emergencies.
  4. Operates an electrocardiograph, defibrillator and other sophisticated medical equipment.
  5. Communicates with a physician and other medical personnel.
  6. Restores, stabilizes and monitors the medical condition of a patient, using electrocardiograph, defibillator, telemetry equipment, oxygen and suction devices, and other sophisticated medical equipment, or as directed by a physician;
  7. Performs advanced pulmonary ventilation to open airways.
  8. Administers intravenous fluids, injections of medications and drugs, closed chest cardiac massage and other procedures following established protocols.
  9. Interprets cardiac arrhythmias.
  10. Observes, records, and reports to a physician the patient's vital signs, condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
  11. May drive emergency vehicles to and from incident scenes and hospitals.
  12. Leads and instructs other emergency medical crew members in emergency care procedures.
  13. Prepares reports of incidents.
  14. Checks and ascertains that an assigned emergency vehicle is completely stocked and in good running condition at the beginning of and throughout the work shift.
  15. Performs other related emergency medical support duties.

Minimum Qualifications for Paramedic II:**

  • One year of experience providing emergency medical care as a certified paramedic. Possession of the following current valid certificates: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic License issued by the State of California; County of San Diego EMT Paramedic Accreditation; and Basic and Advanced Life Support for the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care Provider.
     
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License.
     
  • A valid California Ambulance Driver's Certificate.
