One Book, One San Diego selection

I am pleased to announce the 2008 One Book, One San Diego selection is "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. One Book, One San Diego is presented by KPBS and the San Diego Public Library.

This is the second year of the One Book, One San Diego program. I support our One Book, One San Diego initiative because it brings together our community and encourages residents to join others in the shared experience of reading the same book. The program encourages residents to participate in related events throughout the year, discuss the ideas raised by one book and examine how these ideas connect with our daily lives.

"In Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace. . . One School at a Time", Greg Mortenson and acclaimed journalist David Oliver Relin recount Mortenson's unlikely journey from a failed attempt to climb Pakistan's K2 (the world's second highest mountain) to successfully building schools in some of Afghanistan and Pakistan's most remote regions. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to fight terrorism with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote villages in central Asia.

"Three Cups of Tea" is an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world-one school at a time. This year the schools Mortenson helped build will educate 24,000 children.

"Three Cups of Tea" was awarded the 2007 Kiriyama Prize for Nonfiction. The prize celebrates literature that contributes to greater understanding of and among the peoples and nations of the Pacific Rim and South Asia.

Please check the San Diego Public Library, and local book stores for copies of "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace. . . One School at a Time". Whether you participate in one of the organized community events listed on the Library's or KPBS' Web sites, plan a book discussion group in your home, or just share your thoughts with friends and neighbors, I encourage you to enjoy a great book and a great community conversation.
