Bridges
The Street Division is responsible for the maintenance of certain segments of approximately 300 bridges
within the City limits. These bridges vary in size and construction type. Some of these are maintained
in conjunction with the State of California. The bridges are inspected regularly by either State of
California or City of San Diego engineers. We rely on these inspections and notifications from citizens
to alert us to needed maintenance.
The Street Division utilizes the Bailey Bridge, a temporary bridge which can be assembled and used as
a platform, while repairs are being made to permanent bridges. The Bailey Bridge was initially utilized
to replace the Hollister Street Bridge that was washed away by the Tijuana River in the rainy season of
1993. This special piece of equipment can be hauled in modular groups to the affected area and assembled
on site.
